CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Kleberg, Alice, and Beeville Receive New Stroke Certification
November 15, 2022
Corpus Christi, Texas - CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi– Kleberg, Alice, and Beeville announce it has received certification from DNV as Acute Stroke Ready Centers. This means that these three hospitals stand ready to handle strokes and stroke related medical problems.
The advantage of an Acute Stroke Ready certified program is that these stroke centers are in communities where access to a larger hospital is too far for patients to reach in limited time. With strokes, each second counts, so the faster a patient can get to a certified stroke center, the quicker they can be diagnosed and treated. Ultimately, it saves valuable time, which is known to decrease complications of a stroke.
The DNV Acute Ready certification is derived from evidenced-based standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Kleberg, Alice, and Beeville address the initial diagnosis, initial treatment and when necessary, facilitates quick transfer to a specialized stroke center, such as CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline, which is designated as a Level I Stroke Center.
“Achieving certification shows a commitment to excellence,” said Kelly Proctor, President of DNV Healthcare USA Inc. “It helps demonstrate your community that you are providing the highest level of care that this hospital is designed to offer.”
According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is a leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people each year, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Strokes effect blood flow to the brain, so rapid and effective treatment can save lives and provide the best chance of limiting the extent of long-term damage.
“Time is everything when it comes to stroke care,” said Osbert Blow, MD, PhD, FACS, CEO of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. “That means every single minute counts. This critical certification that our community hospitals now have, allow our well-equipped and innovative teams to provide care for our stroke patients within minutes, saving lives. I am extremely proud of our teams who always strive for excellence in treating our patients.”
