Meet Charlene Dekonenko, MD
Dr. Charlene Dekonenko joined CHRISTUS Children’s in 2024 after residing in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Kansas City, Kansas for 19 years. As a San Antonio native, she is grateful to be back and caring for children and families of her home community. She believes that when she is treating a sick child, she is also caring for the entire family as a unit, recognizing how important it is to support the child not just in terms of their physical illness, but also in their emotional well-being as they navigate a difficult situation.
She performs routine general surgery, but has a particular interest in caring for children with hepatobiliary (liver, pancreas and gall bladder) disease and benign or malignant solid tumors. In addition, Dr. Dekonenko also treats patients for the following: neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, liver cyst or tumor, Wilm’s tumor, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, ovarian tumor, biliary atresia and choledochal cyst.
She has been married for 15 years and has one son. She enjoys running, hiking and Pilates. She is a long-time fan of the San Antonio Spurs and the Kansas City Chiefs.
