Mammograms
Breast Care for Women
When you are a young woman, you may not think of possible health issues women can endure. That is why CHRISTUS Health is here to shed a light on women's health. It is essential that women start paying attention to their breast health starting in their 20s.
A clinical breast exam (CBE) should be part of a periodic health exam for you in your 20's and 30's, preferably at least every three years. However, the American College of Radiology recommends women at the age of 40 start receiving regular mammogram screenings.
What is a Mammogram?
A routine screening mammogram is a highly effective test in the early detection of breast cancer. It could lead to treating and curing breast cancer before any symptoms ever surface. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, routine screening mammograms are not performed. The waiting period is at least 90 days after breastfeeding to undergo a routine screening mammogram.
These exams are often covered by your insurance and you do not usually need a doctor's order to get a routine screening mammogram. However, you must have a Primary Care Provider (PCP) to whom we can send the results of your mammogram.
Diagnostic Mammogram
If you have any of the following symptoms and signs, we highly recommend consulting with your CHRISTUS provider to obtain a doctor's order or prescription for a diagnostic mammogram.
- Have a lump in your breast
- Had a lumpectomy or mastectomy
- Have breast implants
- Have nipple discharge, a rash, or other skin changes
- Or have any other medical problem with your breasts
