Health Sciences Libraries play a critical leadership role in ensuring that the clinical workforce at CHRISTUS Health have access to the most current medical literature and best available evidence.

CHRISTUS Health offers the convenience of the following brick-and-mortar Health Sciences Libraries to our associates and patrons:

CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline, Corpus Christi, Texas

Physically located at CHRISTUS Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, Texas, the Health Sciences Library serves a variety of research, academic, and medical education needs of professionals from medical, nursing, and other ancillary care disciplines with traditional library research and comprehensive reference services. The Library carries an onsite collection of a wide variety of textbooks and current subscriptions to pertinent journals in the fields of medicine, nursing, and health care administration. It features study areas, computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and faxing services. After-hours access may be available by request for employees with a CHRISTUS Health ID badge. The Health Sciences Library support, such as access to electronic full-text articles, can be remotely extended to all research investigators and associates across CHRISTUS Health at no cost to them. All such requests, along with bibliographical information, can be sent directly to library@christushealth.org.

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas

The Harold S. Toy, M.D. Memorial Health Science Library is located on the fifth floor of the Goldsbury Center for Children and Families. The library is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The library holdings consist of a collection of 115 journals and an array of text books. Services Offered to our Medical Staff, Residents, and Professional Staff

  • UpToDate - Point of Care evidence-based medical information. Access from any CHRISTUS desktop. Also available as a mobile application.
  • Nursing Consult - Access 30+ full text nursing journals, a large array of electronic textbooks, patient education tools, and clinical guidelines. Access via the CHRISTUS Health Intranet page or in-house via a desktop icon.

Online Medical Literature Resources

UpToDate LogoUptoDate features advanced medical literature capabilities enabling queries and navigations in multiple languages. This online search engine conveniently synthesizes medical literature, incorporates the latest evidence, and provides specific graded recommendations for optimal patient care. It allows physicians and medical residents find reliable, evidence-based answers to clinical questions quickly and easily with online and mobile access options, while serving as a credible Clinical Decision Support tool.

UpToDate covers several thousand original topics covering internal medicine and all of its subspecialties, including primary care (adult), dermatology, emergency medicine (adult and pediatric), general surgery, neurology, obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health, pediatrics, psychiatry, and primary care sports medicine (adolescents and adults). It also features auto-complete to make searching faster. The searchable UpToDate graphics library includes more than 35,000 pictures, tables, illustrations, diagrams, algorithms, and videos.

Nursing Reference Center Plus

The Nursing Reference Center Plus is an evidence-based information resource designed by nurses for nurses about evidence-based medicine and nursing best practices. It allows staff nurses, nurse leaders, nurse educators, recent nursing graduates, and nursing students to find the right answers to their clinical questions related to practice, education and research needs. The overall effect helps improve regulatory compliance, patient safety and quality outcomes, while decreasing the rates of serious reportable events- the leading hallmarks of High Reliability Organization (HRO). Since the contents are evidence-based and updated continuously as new evidence becomes available, CHRISTUS Health Nursing policies and procedures can be directly linked to reliable literature available on Nursing Reference Center Plus.

MedlinePlusMedlinePlus is a service of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world’s largest medical library, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). MedlinePlus provides high quality, relevant, and curated consumer health and wellness information that is trusted, easy to comprehend, free of advertising, and available in both English and Spanish. Sourced from more than 1,600 selected organizations, MedlinePlus offers information on health topics, human genetics, medical tests, medications, dietary supplements, and healthy recipes. It provides 40,000 links to authoritative health information in English and 18,000 links to information in Spanish.

PubMed CentralPubMed Central is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the United States National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM). In keeping with NLM’s legislative mandate to collect and preserve the biomedical literature, PubMed Central serves as a digital counterpart of NLM’s extensive print journal collection. Because PubMed Central has the capacity to store and cross reference data from diverse sources in a common format within a central repository, the users can quickly search the entire collection of full-text articles and locate all relevant material.
